Compensation for Unused Sick/Personal/Bereavement Leave

Retirement

Upon retirement from the district, certificated employees will be compensated at the rate of $75.00 per day for unused accumulated sick/personal/bereavement leave.  Non-certificated employees will be compensated at the rate of $50.00 per day for unused accumulated sick/personal/bereavement leave.

Resignation

Upon resignation from the district, certificated and non-certificated employees will be compensated at the rate of $50.00 per day for unused accumulated sick/personal/bereavement leave.

Buyback

As an incentive for staff attendance, the Board of Education authorizes an unused accumulated sick/personal/bereavement leave buyback program.  Annually, prior to June 1, an employee may request to be compensated for unused excess sick/personal/bereavement leave according to the following guidelines:

Good Standing

Employees will be compensated for unused accumulated sick/personal/bereavement leave only upon resignation or retirement from the district when the employee leaves in good standing.

For certificated employees, leaving in good standing is defined as normal retirement at the end of a school year or when the Board of Education approves a retirement during the school year for reasons that are out of the employee’s control.  Or a letter of resignation notifying the school district that the employee will not be returning for the next school year.  A separation agreement, non-renewal by the Board, willful violation of Board of Education policy and any violation of state law that would result in a dismissal would be considered not leaving in good standing.  A Reduction in Force or Reduction in Programs which results in a teacher being placed on a leave of absence will be considered leaving in good standing and the teacher will be given the option of receiving compensation for unused sick/personal/bereavement leave or leaving the unused leave in their account pending their return to the district.

For non-certificated employees, leaving in good standing is defined as normal retirement or resignation with two weeks’ notice.  A discharge, quitting without notice, willful violation of Board of Education policy and any violation of state law that would result in the dismissal of a certified employee would be considered not leaving in good standing.

Part Time Employees

Part time employees will qualify for prorated compensation for unused accumulated sick/personal/bereavement leave based on the percentage of the day worked as compared to a full time employee.
