R 4220 Certificated Staff Duties, Schedules and Work Hours

Normal Working Day

Daily and weekly work schedules shall be made by the District, in its discretion, and such schedules may be changed by the District to meet the varying conditions and needs of the District.

It is recognized that professional duties and responsibilities extend beyond the student contact hours to include time for such activities as additional planning and evaluating, meetings, professional growth, parent conferences, sponsoring activities and participation in Open House and PTO meetings, if needed. These professional tasks will be equitably shared so that no staff member is given undue burdens.

Administrative and supervisory personnel assigned to schools or to the central office will observe a uniform working day approved by the Board, unless special arrangements for different hours have been approved by the Superintendent. The Superintendent's office shall be open from 7:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. during the school term and from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. during times school is not in session. Building principal offices shall be open from 7:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. during the time school is in session and 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. during times school is not in session. It is expected that the hours of work of administrative personnel will vary and extend as necessary to fulfill the requirements of the position. All offices and bus garage will be closed during holiday break, spring break, when school is not in session during the regular school year, and inclement weather days.

Administrative personnel shall inform their office personnel where they can be located when out the building.

The minimum standard teaching day is defined as that period of time a teacher is required to be in an educational activity as a participant in the standard teaching assignment. Teachers are expected to be available in their classrooms by 8 a.m. and remain in the evening until 4:00 p.m. or until all non-extracurricular students have departed for the day (the later of the two options). It is mandatory that teachers grant before or after-school time at a student's or parent/guardian's request for conference pertaining to any teacher-pupil situation.

Emergency Closing Days

In the event that schools are closed due to snow or inclement weather, certified staff is not expected to report for work. If an AMI day is called, staff will follow the protocol in place for such days.

Duty Free Lunch

Efforts will be made to provide an uninterrupted duty-free lunch period of at least twenty-five (25) minutes daily. When temporary, unanticipated emergency situations arise, teachers may not receive the full twenty-five (25) minutes.

The scheduling of lunch periods shall be determined by the building administrator or supervisor. Staff members may leave the school building during such periods; however, clearance must be made through the building principal/designee and a prompt return to assigned duties is mandatory.
