P 2861 Head Lice

Head lice will be treated as a communicable disease. Students will be screened routinely and on an as needed basis. Privacy will be provided for screenings. The parent/guardian will be notified by school health or administrative staff when student is found to have head lice. When a student is found to have head lice he/she will be considered free of the risk of contagion only after appropriate treatment is completed and repeat screening by school health staff establishes that he/she is “nit free”, i.e., no nits are found on hair. The student will be prohibited from riding the school bus until repeat screening establishes that he/she is “nit free”.

If, after counseling of parent/guardian by the school nurse, a student continues to have repeated infestation with head lice, suggesting that treatment is inadequate or incomplete, the school nurse or designee as a mandated reporter, may initiate a report of suspected medical abuse to the Children’s Division.
