Purpose
The purpose of this policy is to ensure appropriate student care while maintaining student dignity, health, and safety, and to clearly define the responsibilities of school personnel and parents/guardians regarding toileting needs.

Policy Statement
Students enrolled in the district are expected to be toilet trained prior to school attendance unless documentation exists for a medical condition, disability, or an Individualized Education Program (IEP) that requires accommodations.

Guidelines

1. Expectation of Toilet Training
   • All students without a documented medical condition or disability are expected to be independently toilet trained.
   • “Toilet trained” is defined as the ability to recognize the need to use the restroom, communicate that need, and independently manage personal hygiene.
2. Medical Conditions and Disabilities
   • Students with documented medical conditions, disabilities, or those served under an IEP or Section 504 Plan will receive accommodations as outlined in their individualized plans.
   • Appropriate staff training and support will be provided in accordance with those plans.
3. Accidents and Incidents
   • Occasional accidents may occur and will be handled with discretion and respect for the student.
   • School staff may assist minimally (e.g., providing clean clothing or supervision), but will not provide personal hygiene care such as cleaning or changing students unless required by an IEP, 504 Plan, or medical documentation.
4. Parent/Guardian Responsibility
   • In the event a student who is not toilet trained has repeated toileting accidents or requires cleaning/changing, the parent/guardian will be contacted and required to come to the school to provide necessary care.
   • Parents/guardians are expected to respond promptly to such requests.
5. Repeated Incidents
   • If a pattern of toileting issues occurs, the school may schedule a conference with the parent/guardian to develop a plan to support the student’s readiness for school attendance.
   • Continued concerns may result in delayed enrollment, modified attendance, or other appropriate actions in accordance with district policy and state guidelines.
6. Health and Safety Considerations
   • This policy is in place to protect the health and safety of all students and staff, and to ensure appropriate boundaries for school personnel.

Legal Compliance
This policy will be implemented in compliance with all applicable federal and state laws, including the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act.
